This course is a master-level course for those who are interested in risk management from the viewpoint of industry professionals. The intensions are twofold:
(1) to get you familiar with risk management concepts and tools in a setting of financial industry practice, so you will be equipped to apply economic logic and quantitative techniques to future interesting research or practical tasks;
(2) to link this piece of knowledge to the real world through case studies emerged from company failures (e.g., the scandal of Baring and the fall of Long Term Capital Management), sovereign defaults (e.g., the 1999 Russian default),alternative investments (e.g., global macro hedge funds and mortgage backed securities issued by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac), and etc.
The major content of this course will cover mathematical tools utilized in risk management, financial markets and products, risk classications (market, credit, and operational risk), risk measurement and valuation models, and risk management implications.
